The
Chino Hills State Park Interpretive Association (CHSPIA) held its
first fundraiser called Meet the Meteors in November 2006 to coincide
with the Leonid Meteor Showers. Meet the Meteors consisted of
two events in one. The first event was a Campfire program where
the general public was invited to attend. The second event was
the actual fundraiser, which was a Camp Out and required web
registration.
The Campfire Program
To warm up the audience two board members led campfire songs with the
crowd. The songs were a big hit! Our Campfire presenter
was David Kary, an astronomy professor from Citrus College. He
gave a wonderful presentation on the Leonid Meteor Showers to an
audience of over 150. One of the most interesting facts he provided
the audience was that meteors showers are essentially shooting stars
that are less than a half inch wide. WOW!
The Camp Out
Earlier in the afternoon families, boy scout and girl scout troops,
and friends arrived early to pitch their tents. Most of the
campers managed to at least pop their head of the tent to view the
showers. Though the showers were a bit weak, we all enjoyed the
experience. There were over 130 of us that joined the Camp Out.
Together we enjoyed coffee and donuts in the morning before heading
home. Thank you to all our participants you helped make this
event wonderful!
