Butterfield
Stagecoach Background In 1857, John Butterfield was awarded a contract by the United States
Postal Service to be the first overland mail route connecting the
Eastern US to the new West. The 2,800 mile route began in St. Louis
and had 137 stops until it reached its final destination in San
Francisco. Every 20 miles the coaches and horses were changed – they
had 25 days to get the mail run completed. The coaches operated from
1858-1861.
150 Year Anniversary Celebration The original route of the Butterfield Stagecoach stopped at Chino
Ranch. In celebration of its many stops in California’s State Parks,
including Chino Hills State Park, we will be celebrating the 150 year
anniversary of the Butterfield Stagecoach Overland Mail Route. Learn
about the trials and tribulations of the Stagecoach Route through
Chino Hills State Park!
